Will the OSS really be dismantled?
Our next installment of the Griffin / Butterworth collaboration starts with the end of WWII in Europe. The German's have been defeated and will be shortly signing the surrender documents that will signal that they have been defeated and the Allies have won the battle. So, now what will happen? We still have a war going on in the Pacific with the Japanese? Will the OSS be tasked to change their venue of operation?Well, Lt. Colonel Cletus Frade and the Turtle Team are being told by Mr. Dulles that the OSS is being dismantled. That means that their mission in Argentina will no longer be supported. The team members will most likely fall under the command of Colonel Flowers (the Military Attaché to Argentina) who basically hates the OSS. This means that every member of the team will most likely be reassigned. The team is not happy about this. They feel that the OSS has a major role to still play in America's war efforts and even in their Peacetime efforts. So, why dismantled them? Because the FBI, The Secret Service, the Navy and the Army hate them and have convinced the President that they aren't needed any longer.BUT, before they are dismantled they are asked to take on one more task. The Germans sent 22 Submarines out into the Atlantic towards Venezuela. What is their task and why are they coming that direction? Then the real bombshell. It is believed that one sub has Adolf Hitler as a passenger (he really didn't commit suicide but is fleeing Germany for Argentina) and not only that but also has a half a ton of enriched Uranium that is bound for Japan to continue the efforts to build an atomic bomb.Mr. Dulles tells the team that they need them to find and capture this sub. They need to prove that Hitler is really dead and not hiding out on the sub. They also need to stop the Uranium from reaching Japan. In essence, the team is asked to do the impossible for an ungrateful nation, one that is trying to shut them down. How will they respond? Will they succeed? Will they save the OSS from being dismantled?Furthermore Mr. Dulles tells Cletus that he is free to handle this situation in any way he sees fit and that he will back up his actions with General Donovan and the President. In other words, "Our loose Cannon has been turned loose to do his thing."The beginning of the book reintroduces us to the cast of characters. It also sees the rescue (breaking out of POW prison) of our two German friends, Boltitz and Von Waschtstein. They join Lt. Colonel Frade and the Team Turtle group to carry out this project. The book seems to be too short. It develops the beginning of the project and starts to work towards finding out what they can about the Sub's that they are to find, but then it takes a turn and our story revolves more around the trafficking of German's from Germany to Venezuela and whether that was a project that should have been happening. Frade and his group are asked to help General Gehlen get one last group of people out of Germany. Juan Peron also asks Frade to do an 'exchange' of Embassy officials, but read into that they they really are bringing back out some Nazi's that probably shouldn't be brought out.Secretary Morgenthau, assigns the Secret Service to try and determine if Cletus and his group has gone rogue and is bringing Nazi's out of Germany for profit? If so, he wants them arrested and brought to trial for treason. The story is interesting, but it leaves you wanting to know what happens to the Sub's that supposedly have enriched Uranium and maybe Hitler on board. So, is that the next book? We will have to wait and see.I thought after the last book that I would not find anything new to find fascinating with Lt. Colonel Cletus Frade, but I was wrong. He comes up shinning in this latest novel and now leaves me wanting more.Enjoy!

Another Victory for Griffin
This end of WWII book is like all the WEB Griffin books. You can't wait to get them, and when you are finished, you wish he was writing a book every month, instead of only two a year, which is double what most authors write. This is another fascinating book about LTC Cletus Frade and his band of OSS stalwarts in Argentina, as they work to overcome Nazi end of war plans, to sneak out of Germany, infiltrate Argentina, and continue nuclear research in Japan. Griffin uses his knowledge of politicians, the OSS, the military, and Argentina, to continue to weave his ongoing saga of American heroes operating in South America, and working with like minded Americans and non-Nazi Germans. Cletus again works to frustrate the Nazis, and the fascist Argentineans who work with them, while helping Allen Dulles prepare for the dismantling of the OSS before its conversion to the CIA. Dulles was director of the CIA longer than any other person. One reviewer commented that it really makes sense to read each Griffin series in the sequence that it was written, and I agree that is more fun, but all the books stand on their own. When I introduce my friends to his books, I ask them which they most indentify with, before I get them started. Some reviewers also commented that the OSS books should have as much action as his military books (on the Army - Brotherhood of War, and the Marine Corps - The Corps). Unfortunately, the reality of life is that combat duty has more action than real intelligence work, and Griffin writes about real people in real situations, based on what he has seen, and what his friends in both fields tell him. He always has wonderful inside stories about how and why things actually happened, and those stories continue here. He always tells the good, the bad, and the ugly about bureaucrats, the military, and intelligence work. No one else can bring these people alive the way he can.
