I went for a smaller size as we live in a small two bedroom townhouse. My 4 month old son is just learning to sit and roll. He had couple falls from sitting position but it seems they were not painful at all. He also returned milk once but it did not soak into the mat. The mat is thick and soft and does not absorb any spillage so quite easy to keep clean. No chemical smell whatsoever. I was about to buy an alphabet mat from Argos but then came across this one and decided to buy it. Very happy with the mat but still think £49.99 is quite expensive for this mat. That's why 4 stars only.
