Product Description Internationally acclaimed ventriloquist Nina Conti, takes the bereaved puppets of her mentor and erstwhile lover Ken Campbell on a pilgrimage to 'Venthaven' the resting place for puppets of dead ventriloquists. She gets to know her latex and wooden traveling partners along the way, and with them deconstructs herself and her lost love in this ventriloquial docu-mocumentary requiem. Ken Campbell was a hugely respected maverick of the British Theatre, an eccentric genius who would snort out forgotten art forms. Nina was his prodigy in ventriloquism and has been said to have reinvented the artform. This film is truly unique in genre and style. just rent it. you will be so glad you did.
After seeing Nina Conte in "Family Tree" with Chris O'Dowd (available on Amazon Prime and also highly recommended) I wanted to see more of clever and irreverent Monkey so I found this. Not a documentary-watcher in general but I watched it immediately because I LOVE Nina and Monkey. I feel you must get this and watch it for the good of everything in general and specifically. There are really no words to adequately describe it. I cried buckets. I laughed out loud when Gran quizzed Nina about her pills and I truly hope Nina and Gran are reunited some day.I really thought it to be a masterpiece and more fitting a tribute to Ken Campbell than anything else could be.From imdb:Her Master's Voice (2012)www.imdb.comInternationally acclaimed ventriloquist Nina Conti takes the bereaved puppets of her mentor and erstwhile lover Ken Campbell on a pilgrimage to 'Venthaven' the resting place for puppets of dead ventriloquists. A beautiful, stunningly creative woman, actor, ventriloquist.
I don't go out of my way to watch ventriloquists perform but I have watched many Nina Conti performances. Her puppets are "vessels" through which she expresses her paranoia, insecurities, heartaches and joy, mixed in a way that makes people laugh. Only great actors can pull off a one person show. Ms. Conti controls the room as she infuses her puppets with the same life that vibrates her soul. The many pieces of Nina Conti connect brilliantly with the audience through a selection of brash, gentle and simple characters. The art is making it appear effortless, as she coordinates the coming alive of weird, edgy characters like Monk who's a bit nasty or, docile old Gran, who makes me sad. In "Her Master's Voice" Nina Conti tries to sort whether she believes in herself enough to continue, (if she wants to continue), as a ventriloquist without her "Master" being reachable. Might be that it's time to throw off the shackles and recognize herself as the 'Master."

Quietly Sweetly Wondrous!
Nina is an amazing accomplished performer and so much more. This deep dive into her Id is highly entertaining, wonderfully entertaining, and surprisingly touching. Whether you're into ventriloquism or not is totally immaterial. This is a presentation that truthfully resonates with humanity at large.

Perfect!
Perfect can be a relative term, especially when speaking about a piece of art, but this documentary is indeed perfection. Nina Conti is hilarious and honest in this documentary about her own personal crossroads and the journey she takes to find what she should do next with her career.I'm not certain I can properly gush about this without being completely bias to the brilliance that is Nina, but if having already watched it 3-4 times speaks any volumes to you, then get it. I ended up seeing it first on Netflix, and having watched it through completely, I still felt the need to own it. It's delightful!I find myself laughing at her conversations with other ventriloquists and her discussions with Monkey, then switching to a kind of introspection of my own life as she deals with her own struggles. It is Nina's talent at bringing both of these emotions to the forefront so effortlessly that makes this documentary a must watch.

Interesting Nina Documentary
I liked the fact that this DVD gives the audience a chance to see the reason that Nina started in ventriloquism. I never knew there was a place called Vent Haven. I wish there was more footage of Nina on stage with Monkey. It's both a sad and fun journey for Nina and her audience.

She will put words into YOUR mouth, like "clever," "unique."
Impressive; this woman is brilliant β which means this is no normal ventriloquist and may not appeal to everyone. But it is more than a performance piece; you get beyond her spoken words and into her thoughts, as much as what pushed her further into becoming a professional ventriloquist. The CD made me want to hear more about her β and from her.The piece where her puppet hypnotizes her is great β and I won't spoil the humor of it by telling you how it ends. (But, the idea of a mute ventriloquist is very clever β and very challenging!)

Touching and Funny
Lovely little film looks like it was shot with home video equipment, but very, very well. Extremely personal much of the time and very touching. I've attended the Vent Haven Convention and visited the museum, and know some of the people she interviews in the film (Nacho, the distant voice expert is fun to ride an elevator with- he makes it sound like someone is trying to get in after the doors close and falls down the shaft- hilarious). Nina is wonderfully talented and her mentor Ken Campbell would be proud of the originality and unusual structure of this sweet film.

Never alone
I saw Nina on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and enjoyed her performance very much. While I knew this DVD was more about her journey than any one appearance, I would have liked seeing more of what I saw on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. I did find the Ventriloquist Convention interesting and entertaining and was pleased with the 'distribution' of her deceased mentor's puppets.

A very beautiful portrait of a grieving comedian.
There are times when this movie wants to be a light-hearted mockumentary type look at American ventriloquists, but Nina Conti's grief at the death of Ken Campbell is much too compelling an emotion to occupy anything other than centre stage, and so it does (although the interviews with ventriloquists are fun too). The scenes of her reflecting on Ken's life, his voice, and his influence give an astonishingly honest portrait of undigested emotion, and the process of digesting it turns out to be inextricable from the practice of ventriloquism. This is a wise film, as well as being a very funny one.
