Mastering the National Counselor Examination and the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination

This is a great book to use when studying for the NCE. I passed the first time using this book. This book covers a lot of the psychotherapies the exam covers and additional content that will be on the exam. There is also another great resource for quizzes at tests.com that has several hundred questions to practice for the NCE. Good luck everyone!

The book had lots of great information and was helpful. I would recommend that if anyone is going to include this in their study process that they might want to use this in combination with the Rosenthol book. I would also recommend using various online resource. All these things especially in the early days of your studying journey. Towards the end, I would definitely encourage everyone to look at Dr. Pam Turner’s YouTube channel. Just beware that her videos AND the books can be overwhelming due to the way the information is presented. That is why I would recommend using the books first then the videos. Good luck!!

I am an adult diagnosed late in life with AD/HD and am studying to take the NCE. This is the second book I have purchased to study for this exam and it is by far better than the one I originally invested in (which is popular in color....). The book is a great size; wide enough for laying open to study and thin enough to travel everywhere. It provides well-organized information, case studies, practice questions within each chapter as well as tests at the end of the book, informative tables, and key points at the end of each chapter. To top it all off as the best book (in my opinion), it was written by three professionals who have been in the counseling profession as educators and even part of the ACA board.

I haven't yet taken either the CPCE or the NCE, however the book is a wonderful general study material and reference. It also makes me more comfortable with the texting anxieties relating to the CPCE, as it really helps guide my thinking pattern towards the test with test taking specific strategies and psychological strategies. I prefer this book over other related CPCE/NCE prep books because you get the knowledge of three writers/field professionals, not just one. There is less of an informational and testing bias since there are multiple writers. My only complaint about the printed book is that there is no way (or I've not yet found out how to) grade the in chapter quizzes. The answer key in the back of the book is for the practice test only, not the in chapter quizzes. Cudos for making the answer key section pages a different color though, that way I always know where to open the book as and don't have to guess and flip around. Note: if you purchase an e-book the in chapter quizzes self grade, so this isn't an issue with the e-book. I just happen to not like e-books because I don't always have internet access to have a book. I prefer to carry around a physical book. I've been looking VERY hard through the book on where to find the grading key for the quizzes, and I don't think there is one. It's not in the answer key in the back, nore is it provided at the end of each chapter.

Read and thoroughly studied for 2 weeks. Assuming I passed, because I got a 3 digit score. I had a hellluva migraine the two days leading up to the test, and still felt confident during the test. I struggled with the format of the purple book - I couldn’t get past the first few pages. I suggest supplementing the research and assessment sections with YouTube videos on simplified basic stats. This is a fantastic study resource for the NCE/CPCE! The book presents information clearly and concisely. It has a lot of handy reference tables and self-check quizzes. I have this in addition to the Purple Book and I think these two make a good study pair. Highly recommend!

I studied each section, of the book, for 1 week. I also used Rosenthal Encyclopedia to test myself on each section. I passed the NCE with flying colors. This book is also great for the grad school comp.

This book filled in the gaps and gave me questions that made me feel prepared for test day! Passed the CPCE in one try with this book!
