Useful and Inexpensive
I'm using this device with OBS Studio to capture and digitize VHS tapes with an old Mitsubishi HS-U590 VCR. I've been able to capture tapes, but have had to work around an audio artifact that manifests as a steady pop-pop-pop-... sound at about 2 Hz. When everything is in a stable state it seems to stay that way. I've been able to get to stable operation by getting all settings and filters configured, closing and restarting OBS Studio, and flipping a device capture setting (eg. FPS) back and forth. Very klugey, and I'll update this review if I find a combination of settings that is always stable.I did not experience the popping sound with the supplied VHS to DVD 3.0 SE capture software, but based on available features and supported formats I would prefer to use OBS Studio. The HS-U590 is NTSC with 240 lines horizontal resolution. In the OBS Studio Sources panel a Video Capture Device is added, Device is set to AV TO USB2.0, Custom resolution 720x480 at 30 FPS. Audio Output Mode is Output desktop audio (DirectSound) with custom Audio Device AV TO USB2.0.In the Contols panel Settings, Video Base and Output resolutions are also set to 720x480 at 30 FPS. The audio sample rate is set to 48kHz. This should ideally be set to match the Windows recording device sampling rate (see device properties in Windows Control Panel under Sound) but the only option for the AV TO USB2.0 device is 96kHz, and the only two OBS Studio options are 44.1kHz and 48kHz.In OBS Studio it is possible to add a filter named Video Delay (Async) for the Video Capture Device. A delay can then be added to the video stream to compensate for a delayed audio stream.

Works with Android
I don't have a Windows or Mac computer, just Linux. Also an Android tablet, a Samsung Galaxy S7. I took a chance that this would work with the Android tablet. It does.Note that if you do want to use this with Windows or Mac, the viewing software comes on a mini DVD, not a normal sized one, so you'd have to have a drive that can handle one of those little discs, or find a place to download it online. There may very well be a linux driver that will work with this, but it was easier just to use my tablet.Things you need that aren't in the box. An adapter for USB to USBc (I already had one). A set of RCA style male to male adapter cables. Thought I had these, but couldn't find them. Bought a new set for about $5. A USB input video recorder app. There are supposed to be free ones that work, but I had trouble with them, and ended up shelling out another $5.49 for "USB Camera Pro", which works fine. But if you go this route you may as well try the free apps first and see if you have better luck than I did.I have so far recorded four VHS recordings to MP4 files. The shortest was only 4 minutes, the longest was around 2 hours. All of these worked fine. I've got good MP4 files that I can play on my computer or cast to my TV.[UPDATE] I had 21 VHS tapes that I wanted to back up to MP4s. I've now gotten all of these done, letting them run in the background with the sound turned all the way down while I did other things. Of course, I haven't actually watched all of the recordings yet, but I have sampled all 21 at several points within the run time and am satisfied with the sound and picture quality. They are all on my tablet's SD card, but I also copied them to my computer hard drive.Total cost for this card, the extra cables I needed, and the Android app came to $23.23. Even though I may not need this device again, for me that was worth it.

Great way to capture video from cameras, VCR or other sources.
Great for capturing VCR or other video formats to your computer. Saved vids can then be edited with many different video editing programs available. Easy to set up, easy to use.

This hardware is no longer supported. The original maker is no longer in business.
So when I plugged it into my computer it does show up in the device manager and it claims to be working properly. However I could not get VLC or VEGAS or PREMIER or Cyberlink to be able to open the video feed. The software they provide with the item also does not work to open the feed. It also does not help to run the software in a previous mode of windows compatibility mode. And the company who originally made the product appears to no longer be in business so there is no way to update the software or drivers for this device. I did download the OBS studio and surprisingly this did seem to be able to find the feed and it display it and record it as well. However I was not able to figure out why I was not getting audio. But the video was working great through OBS. That software is free. So maybe you might have better luck at figuring out what you have to do to get audio then I was. but I didn't figure it out. Also they tell you not to use the extension cord that comes with it. Then why include it? Or the non working software for that matter. The cord that comes out of this thing is like three inches long and it was a little stretched to my vcr. I looked down a few days later and the plastic case had just opened right up. wires hanging out. I don't recommend this piece of junk unless you just want to waste your time and money.
