Bought lemons, made lemonade
Like others, I bought this to dye synthetic items, because Amazon described it as suitable for synthetic materials. When it arrived the packaging and instructions stated clearly that it wasn’t. I requested a return/refund, and the seller quickly agreed (as others have pointed out, this may not be their error). Then I thought it had been so cheap it was hardly worth the bother of returning it for a refund, so why not try it out anyway?I wanted to dye a white bra and two different sets of knickers in the Pearl Grey colour, because I can never find the bras I like in the colours I want. I buy plain white bras and play around with colours.Given that I didn’t expect this dye to work, I used my washing machine (95’C cotton wash) instead of faffing about with stove top/bucket methods. I dissolved the powder dye into 1 and half cups of boiling water + half a cup of white vinegar (making it up as I went along, really) and poured it in the drum first, then put the underwear in, then turned the machine on.I’m very pleased with the results. The bra and one set of knickers have fully absorbed the dye . They’re made of 88% Polyamide, 12% Elastane. The other set of knickers had lace on the legs and trim. The lace (not sure what it’s made of) absorbed the dye perfectly. The main knicker fabric (59% Polyester, 34% Nylon, 7% Elastane) didn’t absorb it. But actually, the contrast of the white knickers with grey lace & trim looks really nice, as if they’d cost a lot of money. For the items that took the dye fully, some of the trim is still white. Again, not a problem at all for what I wanted.I gave the items a short wash afterwards (low temp with detergent) and they’ve come out smelling nice and looking good. Possibly a bit darker than what I thought Pearl Grey would look like, but I only dyed a small amount of items and my washing machine works out how much water to use. For accuracy you probably need to follow the instructions properly. For such a small investment I’m very pleased with the results and would happily use it again for anything that’s a polyamide/elastane mix.
