Outstanding Replica of the Real Thing.
Very cool representation of the real thing. Note - this unit has only 7 floats not 10. However it is still worth the price. WARNING - these contain paraffin oil. If you break one and that is likely, it is a nightmare to clean up. Paraffin oil is soaked up by nearly nothing. Paraffin oil even refuses to succumb to paper towels. The glass is thin and for a reason - if the glass was thicker, it would take a longer time for the thermometer to reach the ambient temperature.THAT BEING SAID - do not hesitate to grab one of these. I've bought several from AMAZON and all have arrived in-tact and are within just a few degrees of the room temperature. Actually the 24-inch version I have is nearly 100% accurate. It takes time for it to reach room temperature so be patient and you will be pleasantly surprised. These are more appropriately called thermoscopes and you can read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_thermometer

This thing is awesome!
This isn't the same thermometer pictured here, but it does say that there are only 7 colored spheres.Other than that, this thing is sweet. I thought from the sound it was making when it was delivered that it was broken. The sound I was hearing was the glass spheres inside the thermometer hitting the thermometer. I was surprised at how durable it is. I like to watch it from time to time. It won't keep you on the edge of your seat, but its a nice conversation piece, and I would suggest it.

Amazing
I really love this thermometer. It's easy to read and seems fairly accurate in its readings. Even without that factor, it looks nice, though you need to make sure to keep it in a place where it won't easily be knocked over (maybe a good idea for homes without cats). The glass seems quite thin and easy to break. The colors and tags look nice and it's a remarkable modern counterpart of a scientifically significant invention.

12" Galileo thermometer
Had problems with the first order, however, amazon exchanged it and I was sent a new Galileo and it works great. I am very happy with the service and the product. It not only works great, but it's also nice decor...Thank you very much. I recommend this product.

Attractive, affordable, and doesn't work
It looks great, but all of the floaters hang at the bottom of the tube, rendering it of little value if you actually are hoping to tell temp. People come in my office and ask what it is, and I have to reply- it's a galileo thermometer, but doesn't work. meh.

Very cool Thermometer
This is one cool looking Thermometer & conversation piece to put on my display shelves in the front room. I first saw one of these several years ago. I cant remember where it was and even though I really wanted to get one they were way too expensive. I stumbled across this one while looking for something else and couldn't believe the price so I just had to get one. It is pretty accurate but, it has a kinda wide range between the colored balls. It gives you the temperature in 4 degree F increments instead of the 2 degrees F increments that a regular thermometer does. It may have wider increments than a conventional thermometer but since the balls are so big once you can remember how many are floating is what temperature you can tell what it is at a glance. It's pretty simple really. The fewer balls floating in it the warmer it is, the more balls floating the colder it is.Now I have to get one of the big ones for myself and a few of them this size for gifts for those that are hard to shop for.UPDATE DAY LATER; Just smack a me up side me head. Something has been bugging me about the number of glass balls inside this thing ever since I took mine out of the box. It only has 7 glass balls in it but the one in the photo has 10! What's the deal? You show a picture of one with 10 glass balls in it then in the slightly smaller than usual print you list; *Glass sphere's inside thermometer rise or fall depending on temperatures *7 colored spheres *Gold finish on °F/°C tags attached to liquid-filled spheres *Design based on Galileo's original thermometerA lot of people would consider that deceptive advertising. OK, some listings use a "STOCK" photo of the item that might not look exactly like what you will get. But they usually tell you this in the listing. But displaying a photo of one with ten glass balls in it when you are sending ones with only seven is awful close to fraud.I started to give this a full 5 stars. But because of the difference between it and the photo in the listing I'm only giving it 2. If you change the photo and let me know, then I'll change my rating. After looking at several of the other listings one of these with 10 glass balls in it is at least 17" inches tall and over $20. The other ones I seen that are around 11" or 12" tall only have 5 glass balls in them but still cost more than this one does. So even though its being deceptive with a picture of one with 10 in it when the one they send only has 7, at $10.42 it's still the best deal out of the ones I've seen that are available. I will assume that you got the photo's mixed up and accidentally used one for a 17" tall one with 10 balls in it instead of a 12" with seven balls in it.Any who, in spite of the possible deception, when considering the price of this one with 7 balls VS the others of the same size available that only have 5 and cost more, I have to recommend this one. I can also recommend it for a gift for that person in your life that is so hard to shop for. Just about everybody would think this is something pretty cool and unusual, and cant help but like it.

Good for the price
We have a large thermometer in our family room that we love and wanted something similar for the bedrooms, but not as large. This fits the bill. It is hard getting used to the four degree increments and seeing the temperature in Celsius half the time. I think they're pretty accurate (to each other anyway) as we bought two and they showed the same temperature after sitting in the room for awhile. After about a couple of weeks I noticed that both thermometers sometimes need to be jiggled to get the balls moving. Just this morning one of them showed the temperature at 72 degrees, but the room felt much colder. Jiggled it and two more balls popped up to show 64. That shows a more accurate temperature of the room. Have noticed this issue with the other thermometer too.
