Bought to replace a "top of the line" Master lock. This lock is better in every way imaginable.
I ordered this lock used off of Amazon recently. I was in need of a higher security lock that could not be picked with the ease of a Master lock. The lock and all related items arrived in flawless condition. It comes with a card with the code to make new keys and two keys, one with an LED light on it. I was pretty skeptical about the light- usually they are pretty cheap affairs that only work for a little while. This key is very well thought out- the battery and LED can both be easily replaced if needed. Now on to the lock. "Granit" is a good name for it. Abus rigorously tests their locks according to the CEN standards and this lock rated CEN 5 on a scale where CEN 6 is as high as possible. Abus guarantees this lock to last 40 years in a marine environment as long as it is maintained every once in a while. This sucker is probably going to outlive me. The lock is substantially large and it looks like you could use it (and some creative lock placement) to keep somebody from stealing your Panzer it you had to park it in a bad neighborhood for an extended period of time. The lock was not as heavy as I was expecting, and the build quality is top-notch. It is very easy lock and unlock. Unlike many locks, both sides of the shackle come out when you open it. This little feature actually makes it far easier to put the lock on and take it off- you do not have a couple of pounds of steel awkwardly swinging around as you try to take it off and put it on. Slap the U-shackle through your chain or hasp, slide the lock body over it, turn the key 180 degrees and off you go. It is an operation that can easily be completed with one hand due to how well the parts fit together. The steel gate this lock is closing is probably now the the weakest point in the physical security that keeps people from bothering me or breaking in. In fact, if anybody does manage to get in by breaching this lock I will probably be more impressed than angry. I will be buying more of these in the future as needed.

Great high-security padlock, but not your ordinary padlock
This is a great, high-security padlock. Highly pick-resistant, and essentially impossible to cut the shackle with even a 42 inch bolt cutter. You will have a difficult time finding this quality lock for the same price.BUT - if you are looking for an ordinary padlock most likely this one is not for you. The price should be one indication of that. The shackle diameter and size of the opening are properly described in the Amazon information. The lock is very heavy - about 2.2 pounds, certainly not the 0.16 ounces as currently listed in the Amazon information. The lock won't fit most storage lockers, won't fit most trailer hitches, etc. It is not meant for shipping containers - that is what the RotaLok padlock was designed for. Before you purchase make sure it will work for your application. Locking up a large, heavy-duty, hardened steel security chain is one good application for this lock - and even then it will only fit around one link, so the chain needs to be a pass-through type where one link can fit through another. The lock is designed and tested to meet European security standards - and meets CEN 5. The shackle is protected on all sides, unlike some other lower-security padlocks where a part of the shackle is left unprotected. The shackle is removable and will completely come out of the lock body when padlock is unlocked. This allows for a shackle guard with complete coverage, not partial coverage as is required for most padlocks where the shackle is retained when opened. This is a security feature of the padlock. If you don't like that then this lock is not for you.The key can be removed from the lock after the shackle is removed, but only if the padlock body is relocked. This means that to replace the shackle the key must be reinserted, the body unlocked, the shackle inserted, the body locked and the key removed. This is a security requirement to meet the European CEN rating. Really not that difficult to do - but again if you don't like that feature this lock is not for you.If you just want a padlock to lock up your storage locker, trailer hitch or the like you will be better off looking elsewhere. Maybe a Master lock for $10 to $20, or a more pick-resistant American lock. If you want something more pick-resistant consider one of the smaller Abus locks - maybe the 20/80 Diskus.

Security isn't always cheap (Update: Maybe it is)
This is an outrageous lock. Heavy and durable. It's got a great reputation out there, as the price would indicate. It is limited in that you can't put it through 2 chain links (if you can you wasted your money getting a crappy chain to pair with a great lock). So make sure that you get a chain where the links can go through other links. II did a lot of research into locks and chains after having my motorcycle stolen, and this lock was the one that kept popping up. I now have 2 of these combined with 2 Pragmasis boron steel chains. Having 2 locks and 12 feet of chain may sound crazy, but it's flexible to lock around anything and having 2 locks means if I can't open one then I have a second option to unlock (it's happened to me). This is an expensive lock, but it's makes for a good defense against thieves.Update after 9 years of ownership: I still use 2 of these to lock up a motorcycle on the streets of NY. That's about $14 a year, so far. The design of these locks is awesome. They lay on the ground, sometimes in the dirt when lock, and that means tons of dirt enter from rain. On the worst occasion I might have to jiggle they key to get the dirt out, and just recently the worst case required a couple cycles of hot water and compressed air to clean, but it's back in order. I had it freeze up in extremely cold weather (laying in snow and ice), and less than a minute with my cigar lighter resolves that. So, not only well-built and strong, it is also durable and long lasting, making it an economical purchse.
