Q: how easy is it to remove the beater bar to clean hair from it?

Extremely difficult! This is my biggest frustration with this vacuum. I've had other Bissell vacuums that were easy to clean but this one is almost impossible.

Q: How flat is flat? I don't see a dimension for the height of the head -- will it fit under a low sofa?

Yes it will. I was surprised where it could fit. I have a cabinet that has just under a 4-1/2" clearance and the vacuum fits with no problem. The head swivels, which helps turn while keeping it under the furniture. Looks like the vacuum is about 4" high. This is a great vacuum!! Buy it!!

Q: Is the battery charged on the wall or does the whole vacuum have to be hooked to the outlet?

Good question - the battery can be removed from the vacuum for charging or charged while still in place.
